. >> chuck hagel faces the first major hurdle in the bid to become the nation's defense secretary. the senate armed services committee is set to vote on the nomination. the former nebraska senator faces fierce opposition from fellow republicans who challenged his past statements and votes on israel, iran, iraq, and nuclear weapons. the committee will split along party lines. the nomination is likely to be sent to the full senate. >> and tech stock is down as a car company defends itself against a negative review for a new model s sedan. shares for a company from palo alto closed down 2 percent after the review in the "new york times" over the weekend. the review detailed how the model s sales failed to meet the 300 mile range in cold temperatures. the c.e.o. is dismissing the article accusing the author of writing a "hit piece," saying ""new york times" article is about tests in cold is fake. vehicle logs tell a true story he did not charge to max and took a long detour. saying they're going to try to block chuck hagel's nomination, some of the other things they're going to go up against the president to make sure none of his legislation continues to move forward. will this be setting the stage for more gridlock in washington? does the state of the union have that much power to change? >> depends on what he wants to do. he can gain political advantage on a bunch of these issues. increase the pressure on congress, play what's called the outside game. essentially say you guys are at fault but i don't think he gets, for example, immigration reform that way. he's going to need significant support within the republican party. you have people like senator rubio giving the response tonight who very much want something to get done. so the tone on that will really matter. does he want to get a political advantage, use it as a wedge issue or does he want it to be a legacy, an accomplishment of his administration? you would approach it two different ways depending on what you want to do. >> depending on what the speech says tonight, there are some who says he's
towards confirmation. chuck hagel should get committee approval later today, meaning he could get confirmed by thursday. >> chuck todd at the white house. thank you. >>> valerie jarrett is senior advisor to president obama. ms. jarrett, good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. how are you? >> very well, thank you. i do want to talk about the state of the union. let's start with north korea. the u.n. is convening an emergency meeting at the security council. the basic question is what options are left against a country that may be among the most sanctioned condition tris in the world and yet continues to defy? >> well, as we said earlier, it was a highly provocative act. it violates numerous u.n. security council resolutions. it is a threat to the region. it is a threat to the united states. it is destabilizing and it's not actually in the best interests of north korea. it doesn't strengthen north korea, it actually makes it more vulnerable. it isolates it and it increases the impoverishment of the country. we expect the international community will have a very firm response
